A WOMAN is in hospital with life threatening injuries after she was hit by a car in Southsea last night.

The 49-year-old victim was rushed to hospital after a collision with a black Ford Fiesta outside The Festing pub, Festing Road, just after 11pm.

The driver of the car left the scene but was later found and arrested on suspicion of driving with excess alcohol and failing to stop after an accident.

Paramedics called to help the woman could not attend to her without police backup because of a fight going on close to the scene, according to Hampshire Constabulary.

A number of emergency calls were made to the police by bystanders following the incident.

The arrested man remains in custody this morning.
