A WOMAN was indecently assaulted as she walked home in the early hours of the morning.

The 47-year-old victim was in Estella Road, Portsmouth, when she was grabbed around the neck by a male stranger.

Police say two other men then appeared and indecently assaulted her.

All three then ran off in the direction of Commercial Road.

The victim said she was close to the Hot Air Balloon pub and Estella Road flats when she was attacked at 3.30am on Saturday.

Police have only just released the information.

PC Paul Cardy, of Southsea Targeted Patrol Team, is now appealing for witnesses to the incident.

‘This was a frightening attack which has understandably left the victim shaken and upset,’ he said.

‘The incident occurred close to flats in Estella Road, so despite the late hour it’s quite possible someone may have heard or seen something.’

Nothing was stolen from the victim.

The attackers are described as Asian, possibly of Indian origin, all approximately 5ft 6ins, and were wearing dark-coloured hoodies, trousers and shoes.

Police have now advised women not to walk alone at night.

‘My advice to others returning from an evening out is not to walk alone late at night or hours of darkness,’ said PC Cardy.

‘If there is no alternative ensure to stick to main routes, well lit areas and avoid shortcuts through alleys.

‘Also call someone to let them know you are back safely or let someone at home know what time you intend to return.’

Anyone with any information regarding the attack is asked to call PC Paul Cardy of Southsea Targeted Patrol Team on 101.

Alternatively call the charity Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111, where information can be left anonymously.
