A man has been taken to hospital with serious head injuries after being knocked off his bicycle.

The cyclist suffered serious head injuries after colliding with a car in Tukes Avenue, Bridgemary, just after 2pm today.

The road was shut by police while emergency services dealt with the casualty.

The man, aged about 50 years old, was taken to Southampton General Hospital by ambulance.

An air ambulance went to the scene but was not used as it was quicker to transport the injured cyclist by road.

The man remains in a serious condition at Southampton’s neurological unit.
