Dancer Clemmie is star of disco documentary

DANCER Clementine Rowsell will show she’s got all the moves in a TV documentary.
A production crew followed the nine-year-old, from Havant, and three other girls in the six months leading up to the world championship disco dancing competition at Blackpool Tower in December.
And although she didn’t win, the youngster made the finals ahead of hundreds of other hopefuls.
Every week she and her mum Tory, of Warblington Avenue, travel 400 to 500 miles for dancing classes and competitions but the 42-year-old mum of three says she believes it’s good for her daughter.
‘We decided to do the documentary to promote freestyle disco dancing and show that dancing is a brilliant way for children to keep fit,’ said Tory.
‘A film made before said the dancing world was all about pushy parents, the make up and fancy costumes and it didn’t come across well.
‘We want to change that. The girls don’t wear loads of make up and false eye lashes. Clemmie isn’t even allowed to have her ears pierced until she’s 16.
‘She is a proper little girl who absolutely loves dancing.
‘Most little girls like to dress up in their mum’s high heels and prance around. It’s not a bad thing, she doesn’t go out looking like that.’
Clemmie – as she is known to family – hopes to be a professional dancer and already has a contract with the Royal Ballet Associates and attends their dance class in Eastleigh each week, goes to disco dancing lessons in Crawley twice a week, a gym class, two ballet classes and another dance lesson at Springfield School.
She said: ‘Doing the filming was good fun.
‘I love dancing very much because I like competing and meeting new friends.
‘Going to all my classes is fun.’
Mrs Rowsell, who runs a pub refurbishing business, said: ‘The government talks about cutting obesity in children but if they put dance teachers in primary schools the kids would love it.
‘You can do a dance class for £4 and it’s brilliant for the children. Their faces light up when they are given a routine.’
