THE David Antony salon is celebrating after being crowned the best in The News inaugural Hair & Beauty Awards.

Hundreds of nominations came pouring in from readers keen to support their favourite salon, stylist or beautician.

But after all the nominations were collated only a hair’s breadth of 48 votes separated the David Antony salon and runner-up United Salons.

The win has come at a great time for the salon, because it is celebrating being in business for 30 years at the same address in Winter Road, Southsea as well as director David Hyde’s 50th birthday.

To celebrate the salon’s anniversary, stylists wore 80s-style outfits and regular customers were charged 80s prices for their cuts before getting their evening dress on and heading to the Hair & Beauty Awards ceremony at The Queen’s Hotel in Southsea.

Mr Hyde said: ‘We had a fantastic night.

‘Sandy Lines won runner-up nail technician of the year, Lexi Pearce won runner-up cosmetic beautician of the year, Liam Fry was highly commended in hair colourist of the year which was then won by our own Clair Hockin, and then to top it all the salon won salon of the year.

‘The team was ecstatic. I am sure the cheer could have been heard all over Portsmouth!’

The News Hair & Beauty Awards 2011 were sponsored by TIGI Haircare and saw 22 different salons in the running for 10 different categories.

The awards have been hailed as a success by the judges. Plans are already in place to have a second awards next year, again sponsored by TIGI Haircare.

Awards organiser Sara Houghton said she was overwhelmed by how well the awards were supported by readers, who inundated her with nomination forms.

She added: ‘In the end, the professionalism, creativity and obvious client loyalty of our winning salon, along with the feel of a real family within his team, made David Antony our worthy and an extremely popular winner on the night.’

David Antony is running a raffle to mark the salon’s anniversary with proceeds divided between the Tom Prince Cancer Trust and The Rowans Hospice.
