DAVID Banks regards himself as a stickler for spelling.

So he knew he had to take action when he noticed an area of Portsmouth had been incorrectly spelt on Google Maps.

The 36-year-old spotted that Copnor had been spelt ‘Copner’ when he was searching for a cafe to visit in the area more than a year ago.

He made a point of setting the record straight with Google recently after noticing the online search engine still hadn’t corrected the error.

He clicked on the ‘report a problem’ tool at the bottom of the Google Maps page and emailed Google, asking it to make the correction.

David, of Southsea, said: ‘I am a real stickler when it comes to grammar and spelling.

‘I hate it when I notice that names of places have been spelt wrong.

‘I’m sure thousands of people would have picked up on it being wrong but a lot of people don’t get the time to do something about it.

‘Maybe some people aren’t as pedantic as me.

‘But I’m proud to have come from Portsmouth and I wanted to make sure the city was being accurately represented.’

Since submitting his request four weeks ago, Google has promised to change its error.

David, who lives in Southsea, said: ‘I’m just glad that it’s going to be sorted.

‘I don’t understand why Google hadn’t noticed the error in the first place because Copnor Road was spelt correctly.’

A spokeswoman for Google said: ‘We work very hard to make Google Maps as accurate and helpful as possible for our users, but occasionally there may be small errors.

‘We’re constantly working to improve the quality and accuracy of the information available in Google Maps and encourage users to let us know about any updates that need to be made to our maps.

‘We strive to review these requests and make appropriate changes as quickly as possible.’

@3 - I think you will find that the English education system fails on many aspects. Quote from an American relative, who taught for a short period in the Portsmouth area, " it's not teaching, just crowd control, but then it's difficult to polish a turd"! If the current bread of teachers are not up to effectively teaching a class of thirty 14 yr olds then perhaps they should realise they have chosen the wrong career path! Kids are leaving school these days barely able to undertake basic mental arithmetic or string two words together, so someone didn't do their job properly!!

@ Southseabeach, not wanting to be pedantic.. but 'Tipner' is spelt with an 'e' not spelled.. And at the end of the day a 'human' did enter it!

The Watcher - google's error has nothing to do with our education system. It was obviously included on google maps as Copner by someone who doesn't know the area. For example Tipner is spelled with an 'e'...so its an easy mistake to make, although you'd have thought Google would double check each place name. But I find your snipe at our education system rather pathetic. It may not be great, but it's definitely not the 'majority' who cannot grasp spelling etc. I recommend you give teaching a try, preferably a class of 30 mixed ability 14 year old children - I would love to hear how you got on.

Well done David. It's a pity that the education system fails so many people and we have a majority who cannot grasp the basics of spelling, punctuation or grammar.
