THE donkey derby can only mean one thing – dozens of youngsters racing the four legged animals.

The event kicked off at 1pm on Saturday at Legion Field, in Hayling Island.

Scores of visitors enjoyed the races and betting on them in the beaming sunshine.

And youngsters got the chance to climb on top of a mule and race as their proud parents looked on and cheered.

The annual event was organised by the Hayling Island Lions Club.

If donkeys did not do it for the visitors, then the ever-popular dog show had 12 classes for dog-lovers to enter their pets into.

Julie Paye, 50, of Greenfield Crescent, in Cowplain, visited the derby with her sister.

She said: ‘It was ever so busy, it was a lovely day.’
