A FACEBOOK campaign to keep Portsmouth’s dockyard open has proved popular with around 60,000 people now backing the cause.

The group, Save Portsmouth Shipyard, was set up by Lyle Plato.

He told The News: ‘I simply made the page as I know quite a few people who are affected by this awful news and my grandfather worked in the Navy himself just before I were born.

‘Also, well, you can see around the city how much this has angered people.

‘As everyone here knows, shipbuilding has been in Portsmouth for centuries.’
