ARCTIC convoy veterans departed Portsmouth yesterday for a two-week voyage to St Petersburg.

Sailing on board the MV Discovery, the Second World war heroes will visit Holland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Russia.

Organisers Maritime Memories said more than 100 ex-seafarers and interested people had signed up to be passengers.

On the group’s website it said: ‘Sadly, this will almost certainly be the very last time we are able to do this in such a remarkable way. We are in talks with the Russian government about our final preparations for a special Arctic Convoy Day to be staged during our stay in St Petersburg.’
