BLUE plaques are to be installed on houses lived in by the Cockleshell Heroes in the run-up to their notorious raid on the German fleet during the Second World War.

The Royal Marines who took part in the daring 1942 mission to bomb enemy ships were trained in Southsea.

Working with the Royal Marines Association, Portsmouth City Council has made memorial plaques which will be put up at two houses in Spencer Road and Worthing Road, Southsea, where the commandoes stayed.

The plaques will be unveiled next Tuesday at 3.30pm.
