PRIME minister David Cameron praised the work of the armed forces in an end-of-year message to soldiers, sailors and airmen.

David Cameron recorded a message for servicemen and women, including hundreds from Portsmouth who are among those deployed over Christmas and new year.

Portsmouth-based HMS Iron Duke remains in the Gulf assisting the US Navy which is carrying out bombing runs against Isil in Iraq.

And soldiers and sailors from the city are stationed on board RFA Argus off Sierra Leone helping with the fight against Ebola.

Mr Cameron said: ‘When I look around the world I see our regular and reserve forces doing our country proud: in west Africa tackling Ebola; in the Middle East playing a vital role in the fight against Isil in Iraq; at home pitching in to save people from the 

‘Wherever you are, you stand for the same things – courage, selflessness, sacrifice.

‘These are the values that link the deeds of British personnel over the last century from the Western Front and the beaches of Normandy to the deserts of Helmand and beyond.’
