CAMPAIGNERS are using social media as part of a last-minute push to prevent HMS Plymouth being sent to be scrapped in Turkey.

Nearly 700 people have joined the Save HMS Plymouth group on Facebook in an attempt to reverse the decision, and an online petition – Save Falklands Veteran HMS Plymouth – had attracted 2,276 signatures last night.

The north east-based Marine Support and Training Service, a charity that provides training in seamanship for its members, has arranged a new berth for the ship if the efforts of the campaigners are successful.

It hopes to collect £400,000 by September in the hope of saving the ship, which is docked in Birkenhead at the moment, before the end of the year,
