A TRIATHLETE took the spirit of the Royal Navy with him for a triathlon in Abu Dhabi.

Captain David Bence, 46, from Denmead, finished fifth in his age group in the event.

Capt Bence is a mine clearance diver based in Bahrain.

He took part in the triathlon as a personal challenge, but said he was proud to wear Royal Navy colours to raise awareness of the contribution the navy makes in the Gulf.

Capt Bence said: ‘It was an exceptional opportunity to compete in an event that attracts some of the world’s best triathletes.’

After the race, Capt Bence met Olympic medal-winning triathlete Alistair Brownlee.
