DESTROYER HMS Diamond has completed a mission escorting ships carrying Syria’s chemical weapons stock for disposal.

The Portsmouth-based ship joined a multinational task group charged with escorting the vessels in February.

One ship escorted by Diamond was MV Ark Futura, which sailed to Italy with some of the most dangerous chemicals.

Diamond’s commanding officer Commander Andy Ingham said his crew were proud of their efforts.

He said: ‘This has been an operationally-intense deployment which required us to be at high readiness at all times.’
