CHRISTMAS cheer came early for an armed forces charity in Portsmouth after a hearty donation from the city’s newest superstore.

Staff from Tesco Extra, in Fratton Way, Fratton, handed out free mince pies and mulled wine to support the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity’s concerts at HMS Victory in the Historic Dockyard.

Sarah-Jayne Craig, of RNRMC, said sailors approached the supermarket for help and were surprised by the retailer’s generosity.

‘We are truly thankful for the support given to the events,’ she added.

The final fundraising carol concert will take place tonight. It’s being hosted by the Portsmouth Naval Base commander, Commodore Jeremy Rigby and the Second Sea Lord Vice Admiral Jonathan Woodcock.
