TWO community schemes have received £5,000 in grants.

Milton Glee Club Choir’s Celebrating Portsmouth’s Heroes concert was given £1,650 and Express FM received £3,000.

The cash has come from a Ministry of Defence scheme.

It comes as HMS King Alfred’s work with Express FM could see reservist sailors hosting regular shows, with interviews, music and chat.

Lieutenant Commander Heather Lane, of HMS King Alfred, said: ‘The grant will cover five sessions of radio production training.

‘It will include our production costs, selected music royalties and the costs of purchasing radio recording equipment for HMS King Alfred to allow us to conduct radio interviews.

‘That will be with reserves serving at sea, on operations and during training exercises.

And the 100-strong Milton choir will hold a Celebrating Portsmouth Heroes concert with the Royal Marines Association Band and the Corps of Drums on October 6.

The scheme is run by councillors, the navy and others.
