WONDER-FUL Some of Darings crew visit Petra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World

SAILORS from HMS Daring soaked in the sights of one of Seven Wonders of the World after the ship called into Jordan in the Middle East for the first time.

After a month at sea, it was a good run ashore for the ship’s company to unwind ahead of a tense six months of operations in the region.

Ignoring the backdrop of tensions with Iran over its threats to close the Strait of Hormuz, sailors visited the ruins at the ancient city of Petra.

Able Seaman Chrissy Howie said: ‘Having visits like this after working for long periods at sea is fantastic.

‘The ruins were amazing – seeing such ancient sites in the sand-swept desert was a rare opportunity.’

The Type 45 destroyer is the first of the Royal Navy’s new ships to visit the Kingdom and she was welcomed by royalty and local VIPS.

The visit also allowed for Daring’s company of Royal Marines to practice boarding and searching ships at sea with their Jordanian counterparts.
