CENTURIES ago the 44-gun frigate USS Constitution was a formidable foe of the Royal Navy.

But there was no fear of a broadside this time when HMS Dauntless visited the USA and moored just a few yards from America’s most famous warship.

The Portsmouth-based Type 45 destroyer has rounded off her seven-month maiden deployment with a port visit to the Charlestown Navy Yard in Boston.

Lieutenant Tom Rowley, HMS Dauntless’ air warfare officer, said: ‘In the course of her travels, Dauntless has worked with numerous ships in the US Navy, though none has been as impressive as the USS Constitution, nor could they boast of victories over the British as one of their battle honours.’
