THE impact of the debate on Scottish independence is putting thousands of defence jobs at risk, according to defence secretary Philip Hammond.
The MP said taking Scotland out of the integrated British armed forces would harm defence in all parts of the UK, including workers who are putting together the Royal Navy’s two new aircraft carriers.
Ministry of Defence shipbuilding contracts for the carriers directly affects 4,000 jobs.
‘Yet the spectre of Scottish independence threatens to put those shipbuilding jobs in jeopardy,’ said Mr Hammond.
His comments yesterday came as the UK government launched its latest analysis paper on independence, this time looking at defence.
The 86-page document was published just days after MPs on the Commons Defence Committee said it would be remiss of the Ministry of Defence not to consider the implications of a Scottish vote for independence.
