DEFENCE exports in the UK increased by 62 per cent to almost £9m last year, new figures have shown.

The UK kept its place as the second most successful defence exporter after the United States.

Orders contributing to the results included Typhoon and Hawk aircraft, which support thousands of jobs in firms such as BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce, as well as their supply chains.

BAE Systems is today handing over in Portsmouth the third and final Ocean Patrol Vessel it has built for the Brazilian navy.
