DELIGHTED friends and relatives cheered as Portsmouth naval base witnessed a double homecoming.
Crowds were treated to the rare sight of two huge warships arriving in their home port at exactly the same time – causing twice the normal celebration.
Banners were held high as hundreds of people welcomed HMS Iron Duke and HMS Richmond home after more than six months at sea.
Between them they have brought the fight to smugglers and pirates, delivered humanitarian aid to millions, and even taken on Colonel Gadaffi’s forces off the coast of Libya.
The Iron Duke was actually on her way home when she was ordered to turn around and replace HMS Liverpool off the coast of the war-torn country.
