ON April 19, 1982, Argentina’s rulers rejected US Secretary of State Alexander Haig’s peace plan unless Britain agreed to hand over sovereignty of the Falkland Islands by the end of the year and allow Argentine nationals to settle there.

Meanwhile, Britain’s Foreign Secretary Francis Pym told the House of Commons: ‘We are stepping up the military, economic and diplomatic pressure on Argentina.

‘Our naval task force is steadily approaching the area of the Falklands, and we are continuing to strengthen its ability to carry out whatever tasks may be required of it.’
