ON May 17, 1982, a Royal Navy Sea King helicopter from HMS Hermes ditched into the South Atlantic after suffering an altimeter problem.

All the air crew from Sea King HAS.5 of 826 Naval Air Squadron were rescued.

Britain continued its bombardment of Argentine defence positions on the Falkland Islands with attacks from Sea Harrier jets and naval gunfire.

British peace proposals were transmitted to Argentina on this day. They called for a ceasefire which would see both Argentina and Britain commence the withdrawal of armed forces within 24 hours of signing the proposal.
