FAMILIES and friends of sailors on the navy’s newest commissioned warship enjoyed a day at sea.

More than 120 family members crossed the gangway of HMS Defender to see what their loved ones do when away from home.

Leading Seaman Andrew Clough took his six-year-old son Bradley to the bridge and gave him the wheel.

LS Clough said: ‘He really enjoyed his time in the chair.

‘It’s a job I’ve done many times before, so for me it was fun to be able to show him one of the things his dad does for a living.

‘He has already said he wants to join the navy too.’

Lieutenant Matt Bray organised the day’s activities.

He said: ‘Days like today are a fantastic opportunity to repay our loved ones by treating them to an exciting day at sea.’
