THE former HMS Nottingham was towed out of Portsmouth Naval Base yesterday to be taken to a scrapyard in Turkey.

The decommissioned warship was taken away by ocean-going tugs after being sold to the scrap firm Leyal Ship Recycling last month along with the former warships HMS Exeter and Southampton. Nottingham was the last of the three to leave her moorings at Portsmouth Naval Base. She will be towed to Izmir, Turkey, where the former aircraft carrier HMS Invincible is currently being broken up.

Nottingham was commissioned in 1983. She almost sank in 2002 when she ran aground off the coast of Australia. She returned in 2004 after a £39m repair but was mothballed in 2008 and retired last year.
