THE former head of the Royal Navy has told how he used to have ‘snowball fights’ with asbestos while serving aboard Portsmouth warship HMS Albion.

During a debate at the House of Lords, Lord Alan West – the navy’s former First Sea Lord – recounted how he used to play with the lethal substance.

He said: ‘One has to remember that none of us knew that it was dangerous. I can remember having snowball fights with asbestos in the boiler room of HMS Albion because we did not know that it was so dangerous.’
