Government sells off HMS Ocean for £84m

MINISTRY of Defence officials have said the Royal Navy's current flagship will join the Brazilian Navy in June after she was sold for £84m.

HMS Ocean is to be decommissioned from the Senior Service in March, joining the Brazilian Navy in the summer.

The helicopter carrier’s sale was leaked by the Brazilians last year. The MoD said the cash would go into plugging its budget blackhole.

Clive Walker, head of the Defence and Equipment Sales Authority which sold Ocean, said: ‘The successful sale of HMS Ocean to the Brazilian Navy will provide a financial return to the UK which will now be reinvested in defence.’

During her 20-year career, Ocean has covered more than 450,000 nautical miles, tackling everything from war zones to humanitarian aid.

Aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth is next to become the navy’s flagship.
