MORE than 100 people enjoyed the rare chance to explore a Royal Navy warship in the Gulf.

Portsmouth-based HMS Atherstone opened her gangway to locals in Bahrain as part of the UK embassy’s Great British Week.

Lieutenant Commander Andy Smith, the commanding officer of HMS Atherstone, said: ‘The Royal Navy has maintained a presence in the Middle East for 30 years and we have had a permanent presence in Bahrain since 2003.

‘Events such as these are all about promoting the UK in Bahrain and inviting members of the local community on board allows us to demonstrate our many capabilities and show how we operate.’

The ship, which has been in Bahrain since June 2012, is one of four mine countermeasure vessels based at Mina Salman port.
