Sailors and personnel at HMS Collingwood, Fareham, recently came together to celebrate Movember, where participants grow moustaches to raise money and cancer awareness for charity.

For naval personnel, this provided a unique opportunity, as normally they are permitted to grow only full beards.

This year’s charity challenge saw sailors judged for their moustaches, with Captain Steve Dainton and Commander Heather Rimmer doing the judging.

The winner of ‘the ultimate accolade, the man with the best embodies Movember, and all’, was Leading Physical Trainer Paddy Stephens.

Simon Hearnden, runner-up in the ‘Ultimate Mo’, said: ‘This was great fun to be involved with. It’s for a really good cause.

‘As naval personnel, we are normally only permitted to grow a beard and tash, so I shaved off the beard for the final.’

Behind the Movember fun, there is a very serious message to raise awareness for testicular, prostate cancer and mental health issues.

Leading Physical Trainer Vicky Jarvis, who organised the even,t said: ‘I am really pleased with the personnel who stepped forward to become a ‘Mo Bro’ for the month of Movember and I hope that this continues to happen once a year at HMS Collingwood.’
