HMS Cumberland has rescued 200 civilians from Libya after making a second emergency mission.

The ship’s captain Steve Dainton, who lives in Waterlooville, sailed the Type 22 frigate back to Benghazi where it docked around midday yesterday.

Around 50 British citizens - mainly oil workers - and 150 foreign nationals boarded Cumberland. The ship then sailed for Malta and the Britons were expected to be flown home flown home today or tomorrow.

Meanwhile the Portsmouth-based destroyer HMS York remains on standby in the region after docking in Malta to take on board supplies.
