THE navy’s last Type 42 destroyer will return home to Portsmouth tomorrow.

Portsmouth-based HMS Edinburgh has spent the last six months patrolling the Atlantic but will now be decommissioned in June.

She has now reached the grand age of 30 years and has 793,345 miles on the clock.

She left the city on her final deployment in September, carrying out maritime security operations around the British South Atlantic Islands and counter-narcotic operations off West Africa.

The crew had the chance to visit ports in South Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas.

The ship took part in the second Gulf War in 2003, supporting Royal Marines ashore and acting as escort to the helicopter carrier HMS Ocean.

All Type 42s have now been replaced by Type 45s.

HMS Edinburgh is expected to pass the Round Tower at 10.10am.
