LOOKING glorious after an extensive £20m refit, HMS Richmond was yesterday welcomed back to Portsmouth with open arms. The Type 23 frigate has undergone an eight-month upgrade in Devenport, Plymouth, to become one of the Royal Navy’s most potent warships.

Engineering firm Babcock Marine carried out the work, including improvements to several weapons, such as the Seawolf missile system and two automatic 30mm small calibre guns.

Since leaving Devenport, she has conducted trials along the south coast and around Scotland, and will carry out sea training in the autumn.
