PERSONNEL from HMS Sultan in Gosport are taking on a weighty challenge this week for Children In Need.

The sailors plan to lift 9,439 tonnes – the weight of one of the base’s namesakes – the 1870 ironclad ship HMS Sultan.

They are aiming to reach a total of 157,317 reps of a 60kg bar to hit the target for the charity.

Leading physical trainer Karl Kennett said about 500 sailors would take part.

He said: ‘We decided to set the challenge as we thought it was a big enough weight that we could get everyone from across the establishment involved.

‘There’s going to be a lot of effort required, and the physical trainers have each committed to chip in 1,000 lifts over the week so together hopefully we will be able to get there.

‘We have set up a fundraising page so that anyone can help show their support and I would say to anyone that, any help that you can give is amazing.’
