A SILVER medal awarded to the master of Admiral Lord Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory is set to fetch up to £15,000 at auction.
The officer class Davison’s Nile Medal belonged to Thomas Atkinson who was at the ship’s helm throughout the Battle of Trafalgar and was described by Admiral Lord Nelson as ‘one of the best masters I have seen in the Royal Navy’.
Atkinson served with Nelson during the Napoleonic Wars and is reputed to have held Nelson while his arm was amputated following the attack at Santa Cruz, Tenerife.
Now the medal is to be auctioned at a sale of fine art and antiques by Peter Wilson auctioneers in Nantwich, Cheshire on November 9 and 10.
It will be sold with the Baltic Medal, 1856 engraved ‘WG Atkinson, Master’s Assistant HMS Arrogant’ and a Greenwich Hospital Nautical School Medal for Science and Good Conduct engraved ‘HN Atkinson 1857’.
The three medals have been sent for sale by a private collector and naval historian – who is a past archivist and librarian of The Nelson Society.
