A 17-GUN salute has rung out across Portsmouth Harbour as HMS York returns home for the last time.

The Type 42 destroyer is at the end of a 27-year career serving the Royal Navy.

Today her crew of 240 are sailing into the city before the decommissioning ceremony takes place next week.

HMS York is one of the navy’s last Type 42s and she is being taken out of service to make way for the new Type 45s.

She has clocked up 750,000 miles protecting the nation’s interests around the world.
