AN INQUEST has opened into the death of a Royal Navy sailor killed in a car accident in Malta.
Leading Engineering Technician Simon Allen, 30, died on September 13 while his ship HMS Daring was on a stop-off, a coroner has heard.
The Portsmouth-based warship was on its way to join the fight against Isil.
Police say LET Allen, of Wigan, was hit by a Peugeot 508 in harbour town Msida.
An inquest was opened and adjourned at Bolton coroner’s court pending further enquiries. Malta police are investigating the incident.
HMS Daring left Portsmouth on September 2 with a 190-strong crew for a nine-month deployment to the Persian Gulf.
She is providing air defence US aircraft carriers as they attack terrorist targets in Iraq and Syria.
A spokesman for the Royal Navy said: ‘LET Allen’s next of kin have been informed and our thoughts and condolences are with them at this difficult time.
‘Police in Malta are investigating the incident. It would be inappropriate for us to discuss any further at this time.’
She is taking over from her sister ship HMS Defender who returned from a silmilar role earlier this year.
