DOZENS of Japanese naval officers spent the afternoon experiencing the type of training their Royal Navy counterparts receive.

Around 90 officers from the visiting Japanese Training Squadron visited HMS Sultan in Gosport and HMS Collingwood in Fareham.

They were given comprehensive tours of the facilities at both bases, including the General Purpose Machine Gun simulator and the Royal Navy Leadership academy.

Lieutenant Takashi Matsunaga, 24, said: ‘We have enjoyed it. It was a great pleasure to come here.

‘You have more technology and we are very impressed with the gun simulator.

‘Everyone we have met has been very kind.’

Once the training was over, the sailors rejoined their Royal Navy counterparts for some sports activities.

The Japanese squadron left on Thursday.
