JASON Lyons is not your average 40-year-old.
The former Royal Marine from Alverstoke decided to mark the milestone birthday by taking on the Ironman UK challenge – despite never doing a marathon or triathlon before.
He said: ‘I used to do cross-country mountain biking until I was about 30 but I stopped doing it and put on quite a bit of weight. With me turning 40 this year, I wanted to do something about it.’
After months of hard training, Jason completed the 140-mile event in 13 hours, 11 minutes.
He said: ‘It was like swimming, cycling and running from Gosport to Solihull, so it’s a fantastic achievement. I’m trying to take it all in.’
His wife Rachael, 33, said: ‘I’m so proud of him. We’ve lived and breathed it since last September.’
Jason is fundraising for Forces Children’s Trust and NOWZAD, which rehomes stray animals from Afghanistan.
