THE 70th anniversary of the Maltese people being awarded the George Cross will be celebrated on Saturday.

The Sacred Heart Church, in London Road, Waterlooville, has been chosen by the Maltese Culture Movement as the national venue for the celebrations.

King George VI awarded the George Cross for the heroism shown by the Maltese people early in the Second World War when they came under attack from both German and Italian troops.

Bernard Scerri, president of the movement, said: ‘We chose Waterlooville because a lot of Maltese people have settled in Hampshire.

‘We would love to see veterans and people of Maltese descent but everyone is welcome. We will celebrate with Maltese food and drink and watch a film about the heroics of our forefathers during those trying times.’

The free event starts with a celebration mass at 11am.
