MINISTRY of Defence scientists have received recognition for their work supporting operations on the Afghanistan front line.

Matthew Parris, Sarah Heard, William Goodhind and Ali Sahan based at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory’s (Dstl’s) Portsdown West site, near Portsmouth, were each presented with an Operational Service Medal by Dstl Chief Executive, Dr Frances Saunders.

More than 200 Dstl staff have deployed to Afghanistan for tours of up to six months since 2001.

Dstl’s operations support leader, Dr Deborah Fish, who has deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan, said: ‘The work of Dstl scientists has a huge impact on our operations, as confirmed by the thanks we receive from operational commanders. .’
