THE government has sought legal advice on military action in the event of a war breaking out between Israel and Iran, it emerged yesterday.

Ministers were reportedly told that military action against Iran was likely to lead to a wider war in the Middle East and the closing of the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil supply route which the US and UK has pledged to keep open.

The Portsmouth-based Type 45 destroyer HMS Daring is on patrol in the Gulf at present.

A Downing Street spokesman declined to comment on the ‘contingency plans’.
