ARMED police are a common sight at Portsmouth Naval Base — and more of them have qualified by taking part in a firearms course.

A dozen newly-qualified Ministry of Defence Police officers have completed the first initial firearms officer course which was held at Fort Blockhouse in Gosport.

During the six-week course the students carried out real-life scenarios in the base and fort.

The first two weeks saw them learn how to handle the MP7 or SA80 weapons and tasers.

The remaining weeks consisted of tactical training, interceptions, vehicle drills and dealing with

armed threats.

Sergeant Amanda Webb, who is based at HMS Nelson, said: ‘I have learned so much on this course.

‘The instructors are great and there’s a good group of people, we all get on well.’
