STUDENTS have been learning about potential uses of a 3D printer at a navy base.

The mechanical engineering students from Fareham College visited HMS Sultan, in Gosport, to learn how staff there are using their new device.

It comes as a team from the base’s Defence School of Marine Engineering is working out how it can be used to teach.

Some hope it could be used for making spare parts.

The kit can scan an item, import it into a computer aided design programme and then reproduce it.

A 3D printer has already been taken out for sea trials.
