THE head of the armed forces has praised the Royal Navy’s operations off Libya.

Speaking to servicemen and women at Gioia del Colle air base in southern Italy, where RAF jets have been based during Libyan bombing raids, the Chief of Defence Staff General Sir David Richards said: ‘The Royal Navy has been absolutely critical to the overall success of the operation and I will be telling the First Sea Lord how grateful we all are for that.’

Despite rebels taking control of the capital city of Tripoli last month, Portsmouth-based HMS Liverpool is still operating off Libya as fighting continues elsewhere.
