TWO sailors who became friends while completing their senior rates leadership course are now looking to take on another challenge to raise funds for a children’s charity.

Petty Officer (Air Engineering Technician) Ben Smith and Petty Officer Engineering Technician (Weapon Engineering) Dan Hill decided to put their passion for fitness and athletics to good use by taking part in a weekend of activities starting on Saturday.

The duo, who are based at HMS Sultan and HMS Collingwood, will take part in the Bournemouth Bay Half Marathon, a bike ride to London, and the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon.

They will be raising money for Variety, a children’s charity which works with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Ben said: ‘We are both strong supporters of the charity and the work they do.

‘It was really surprising to see all the different projects they are involved in.’

Variety provides excursions, grants, and equipment including wheelchairs to youngsters whose lives are affected by sickness or disability.
