THOUSANDS of people visited Portsmouth’s helicopter carrier HMS Illustrious when she threw her gangways open to the
public.

The warship was in London to mark the Battle of the Atlantic commemorations there.

Her ship’s company welcomed on board more than 7,000 visitors while she was berthed there.

‘It was a real pleasure to be able to open our ship to so many Londoners,’ said Commander John Voyce, who heads the ship’s marine engineering team.
