THE Royal Navy’s newest warship arrived in Portsmouth this morning.

HMS Defender sailed in to Portsmouth Harbour at 9.30am.

She is the fifth of six £1bn Type 45 destroyers built for the navy by BAE Systems.

The defence firm will formally hand the warship over to the navy in a ceremony at Portsmouth Naval Base this afternoon.

Around 50 people gathered in the baking hot sunshine at the Round Tower in Old Portsmouth to see Defender arrive.

Among them was Rebecca Nash, wife of Defender’s captain Commander Philip Nash.

She said: ‘It’s fantastic. He was really excited about bringing the ship home. There’s been a lot of hard work to get to this stage.’
