New boss for the Royal Navy

NEW ROLE Sir George Zambellas

NEW ROLE Sir George Zambellas

ADMIRAL Sir George Zambellas will take over as the Royal Navy’s First Sea Lord in April, the government has announced.

Defence Secretary Philip Hammond today unveiled a number of new senior military appointments.

And among the shuffle, it was revealed Adml Zambellas will take over from the current First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope.

Adml Zambellas began his 33-year navy career flying helicopters and captained HMS Chatham during the Sierra Leone intervention in 2000.

He played a leading role in the 1997-1998 Strategic Defence Review.

Last year he served as the Royal Navy’s Fleet Commander and commanded Nato maritime operations from its UK headquarters in Northwood.

Other changes to the armed forces announced today include a new head of the Royal Air Force.

A new overall head of the armed forces will be announced in March.
