A YACHT caught in the centre of a scandal has begun its new life in Gosport.

Former BP boss Tony Hayward hit the headlines when he was spotted racing the 52ft yacht, Bob, at the height of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

Yesterday, the vessel’s owners, Mr Hayward, Sam Laidlaw and Rob Gray, donated it to the Toe in the Water charity at a ceremony at the Joint Services Adventure Sail Training Centre in Gosport. The tri-forces charity works to inspire injured servicemen and women through sailing. The £250,000 yacht is already being put to use as part of the charity’s annual crew selection weekend.

More than 170 people have expressed an interest in becoming volunteer crew.

for the upcoming season.
