Normandy veteran Bernard Jordan, who staged a ‘great escape’ from his nursing home to attend the 70th anniversary celebrations of D-Day in France, could be honoured with the freedom of his home city.
The 89-year-old, pictured right, stole away from Hove to Portsmouth so he could get the ferry to France.
The Mayor of Brighton and Hove Brian Fitch is now proposing the city council grants the accolade to Mr Jordan.
Mr Fitch said: ‘At the age of 89, he hasn’t lost any of that spirit and I think he has been an inspiration to all ages.’
The former Royal Navy officer captured the hearts of the nation when he left The Pines nursing home in Hove last week to attend the commemorative events in Normandy by himself.
